(March, 2015-Riverhead, NY)

1525575_602053643177194_1293083286_nThe North Fork Horseradish Festival will be taking place Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the Long Ireland Brewing Company located at 817 Pulaski Road in Riverhead, NY from 11am-5pm. Kicking off the spring season with all things horseradish-contests, demonstrations, seminars, shopping and more-the event promises to be a “hot” one for the whole family.
The North Fork Horseradish Festival will host a horseradish amateur recipe contest sponsored by Gold’s Horseradish, root lugging contest and, a highly anticipated “Bloody Mary” contest sponsored by Long Island Spirits. Demonstrations will include cooking with horseradish and how horseradish is made. Non-profit, Kids Need More, will be hosting children’s activities like an egg hunt with prizes furnished by Kilwin’s of Babylon, face painting, and potato sack races. Live music will be performed by Eastbound Freight Bluegrass. Samples will be provided by many exhibitors but food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Horseradish has a long history on the east end of Long Island, which is one of the many reasons the festival organizers, Starfish Junction Productions, founded the North Fork Horseradish Festival in 2014. Several years ago, a horseradish ‘party’ began as a small, informal gathering of local friends and family who spent hours peeling, chopping and grinding fresh bushels of horseradish root together. As the years passed, a growing number of people joined the festivities resulting in hundreds attending the party in 2012 at one of the local wineries. Last year 1,500 people attended the North Fork Horseradish Festival! To accommodate the continued growth, this year’s North Fork Horseradish Festival has been moved to, sponsor, Long Irelands Beer Co.’s brewery grounds off Pulaski Street in Riverhead which will enable more people to attend and provide more parking among other things.

“We are excited to see the North Fork Horseradish Festival expand. We believe agriculture and horseradish, in particular, are part of the roots of the North Fork. Our goal is to nurture those roots into a family-friendly Long Island event for years to come that all will associate with the Spring season,” stated Event Manager Kristyn Dolan.

Tickets for the North Fork Horseradish Festival will be sold for $20 online before the event and $25 at the door (if the event is not sold out). Admission includes seminars, samples, activities, contests, and live music! Children 12 and under are admitted for free but should get a complimentary ticket online. A portion of proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association. Tickets and additional information are available online at  NoFoHorseradishFest.com.
