The North Fork Horseradish Festival is extending an open challenge to all cocktail enthusiasts on Long Island to stop horsing around and decide once and for all who makes the Best Blood Mary on the island. The festival will take place on April 12th, 2014 at Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead and will feature everything and anything horseradish, including a contest for everyone’s favorite morning cocktail. Visit NoFoHorseradishFest.com for tickets and information.
The festival is encouraging cocktail enthusiasts of all kinds (i.e. bartenders, mixologists, those who brag to their friends that they make the best bloody mary) from all ends of Long Island to come out for a day of farm-filled fun while putting the age old debate to rest. There is no entry fee required and contestants of all skill levels are encouraged to join. Contestants will bring all their ingredients to the festival, including glassware, and then have ninety-seconds to construct their Bloody Mary. Their beverage will be evaluated blindly by a panel of judges. Contestants can do whatever it takes to make their drink stand out but no matter what it must contain horseradish. The winner not only gets a plaque for their home or business crowning them the “Home of Long Island’s Best Bloody Mary”, but the contestant who wins will receive a $100 gift certificate to BBD’s restaurant in Rocky Point.
The horseplay doesn’t stop there, though. For the people who prefer their horseradish in a meal rather than a cocktail, the North Fork Horseradish Festival will also be hosting a horseradish recipe contest open to both professional chefs and home cooks. Feel free to get creative with sauces, dips, soups, and anything that goes good with horseradish. The winner of this contest will not only get infinite bragging rights but also a year’s supply of Cabot Cheese to enjoy all year (a $312 value). While it is unclear at the moment whose horseradish recipe reigns supreme, it is certain that the North Fork Horseradish Festival has all the ingredients to be a fun-filled day for the whole family. To enter either the Bloody Mary or recipe contest, please visit the “Contest/Activities” page of NoFoHorseradishFest.com. Tickets for the festival can be purchased on the website for $20, children 12 and under are free.
